That is far too many to compare one by one, so this guide explains how to narrow the list sensibly.
First, understand what "best" means here
There is no single official ranking of CS departments in Pakistan. What does exist is the Higher Education Commission's W-category system, which classifies universities as W1, W2, W3, W4 or X based on institutional criteria such as faculty qualifications, research output and governance.
Two cautions worth keeping in mind:
- The HEC category rates the whole university, not the CS department specifically. A W1 university can have an average CS department, and a W3 university can have an excellent one.
- For engineering-accredited degrees you should also check PEC accreditation, and for computing degrees look at whether the programme is accredited by the National Computing Education Accreditation Council (NCEAC).

- NUST, Islamabad — admission through the NUST Entry Test (NET), where the test carries 75% of your merit
- LUMS, Lahore — BS Computer Science at SBASSE; entry via SAT, ACT or LCAT

Which computing degree should you pick?
The label matters more than students expect:
- BS Computer Science — the broadest option: algorithms, data structures, operating systems, databases, networks and machine learning.
- BS Software Engineering — more emphasis on the engineering process: requirements, architecture, testing and project management.
- BS Artificial Intelligence / Data Science — newer degrees weighted towards statistics, machine learning and data engineering. Check that the department has faculty who actually research in the area.
- BS Information Technology — more applied and systems-oriented, typically with less theory and mathematics.
- BS Computer Engineering — sits closer to electrical engineering, covering hardware, embedded systems and architecture.
A practical shortlisting method
- Filter by city you can realistically live and intern in.
- Check accreditation — NCEAC for computing, PEC for engineering degrees.
- Read the actual course list, not the brochure. Look for solid algorithms, systems and mathematics coverage.
- Check the faculty page for PhD-qualified teachers who publish in your area of interest.
- Ask about final-year projects and internships — where do students actually end up?
- Match the entry test to your strengths: NET is heavily weighted at NUST, while LUMS and IBA accept SAT.
