Choosing a degree for career reasons is sensible, but most "highest paying jobs" lists in Pakistan quote salary figures with no source. This guide takes a different approach: it looks at which fields are genuinely in demand, what you must study to enter them, and where those degrees are actually available.

A note on salaries: pay in Pakistan varies enormously by employer, city, sector and experience — a software engineer at an export-focused firm and one at a local agency may earn several times apart. Treat any single quoted figure with scepticism, including ours. We have deliberately not invented numbers.

1. Software engineering and computing

Pakistan's IT export sector is the country's clearest growth story, and computing remains the most widely offered field of study — 757 programmes at 171 universities. Routes in include BS Computer Science, Software Engineering, Data Science and Artificial Intelligence.

2. Medicine and allied health

Medicine remains the most competitive route in Pakistan, with 564 medicine and health programmes across 75 universities. Entry to MBBS and BDS runs through the MDCAT.

3. Engineering

Electrical, mechanical and civil engineering remain core to energy, construction and manufacturing. The critical point is accreditation: your degree must be accredited by the Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC) for you to register and practise as an engineer. 4. Accounting, finance and business

Banking, audit and corporate finance continue to absorb large numbers of graduates. Degrees such as BSc Accounting and Finance map closely onto professional qualifications (ACCA, CA, CFA), and combining a degree with a professional qualification is the standard route into audit firms and corporate finance. 5. Data and analytics

Demand for people who can work with data spans banking, telecoms, e-commerce and development organisations. Entry routes include BS Data Science, statistics, mathematics, economics and joint degrees such as LUMS's Economics, Data and Computer Science major.

6. Law

How to choose without guessing

1. Check accreditation first — PEC for engineering, PM&DC for medicine, NCEAC for computing, HEC recognition throughout.
2. Look at where graduates go, not where the brochure says they could go. Ask the department directly.
3. Weigh location. Internships and first jobs cluster in Lahore, Karachi and Islamabad.
4. Pick something you can sustain for four years. A degree you dislike but tolerate rarely leads to a strong career.

Is computer science still worth studying given how many graduates there are?
